Treatments
What does a Smart Bowen treatment involve?
In the first treatment the therapist will gather information about the person including general health, medications being taken and their desired outcome of the therapy. Following a body assessment, the client will be asked to lie on their front on the treatment table and the therapist will begin the treatment. The first treatment will last an hour and follow up treatments generally last for 45 minutes. At the end of the session the client will be offered a glass of water and the therapist will discuss post-treatment care and any further appointments.
Depending on the severity of the injury multiple treatments may be required. Clients with chronic conditions are recommended to go on a maintenance plan, involving ongoing treatments every 3-4 weeks.
Relaxation Treatment
Smart Bowen Therapy works on the emotional plane of the body as well as the physical, and is very effective in helping to manage:
- Nervousness and sleep issues in children and adults- Emotional stress and Depression- Anxiety- Cancer support- Chronic pain- General Wellbeing- Re-energizing body and soul
Smart Bowen Therapy balances the autonomic nervous system. It helps the body to relax and de-stress. Any condition that threatens homeostasis in our body is a form of stress. The response to stress is caused by the sympathetic nervous system and our body reacts with a fight or flight response. The body is alarmed, the heart rate goes up, muscles become tense and the blood pressure rises. Being in a prolonged state of stress, fear and anxiety is very detrimental to our immune system, as it flushes excessive amounts of cortisol and adrenaline through our system. Short bursts of these hormones due to acute stress (minutes or hours) generally help our immune system fight infections and inflammation. However, when stress levels are sustained longer than a few hours, the hormones deplete us and the immune system becomes exhausted, opening us to risks of infections.
The relaxation treatment will help with mindful breathing exercises, essential oils and targeted Bowen moves to slow the heart rate and help the body and mind relax. Depending on the client’s preferences, elements of Craniosacral therapy (moves on the head) or Reflexology (moves on the feet) are integrated.
Holistic Remedial Treatment
- Lower back pain (sciatica, bulging discs) - Neck and shoulder pain (frozen shoulder)- Hip and Knee pain- Sports and accident injuries- Groin pain, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length- Arthritic Symptoms, joint pain- Headaches and Migraines- Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome- RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow- Neurological disorders like MS (multiple Sclerosis) and Parkinson

TMJ Treatment
The TMJ joint is very important for our body balance and a misalignment (clients feel their jaw is out) can be the cause of many underlying conditions and problems. This problem has been described as a ‘hidden imposter’ (Phelan, 2011) because it is often responsible for many issues in the body. This is why the TMJ move is often integrated in the holistic remedial treatment.
In this treatment, the therapist takes a short history of the client and then performs a physical assessment, checking the jawline, eyebrows, cheeks, lips and trigger points. The client may also be asked to open and close the mouth while the therapist examines the movement of the condylar heads during the opening and closing of the jaw. Observing any restrictions while opening the mouth or hearing any clicking noises indicate the jaw is out of alignment. The client will then be asked to lie down on the treatment table while the therapist conducts a kinesiology muscle test. This helps to test what side of the TMJ joint is compromised. With the help of wooden tongue-spatula-depressors, the correct position of the jaw will be found. The therapist will then correct the jaw alignment by performing gentle Bowen moves on specific points of the jaw and surrounding muscles. This is usually a painless procedure and very effective. The client will then rest for a moment, before another muscle test is performed to make sure the correction was successful. The client will be asked to return for a follow-up treatment in a week to make sure the TMJ alignment holds and the joint remains stabilized.
